How to Fix a Furnace Blowing Cold Air: A Step-by-Step Guide
Is your furnace blowing cold air? Learn DIY fixes, common causes, & when to call a pro in this step-by-step guide.

Why Your Furnace Is Blowing Cold Air: Quick Diagnosis Guide
A furnace blowing cold air instead of warm air is one of the most frustrating heating problems you can face, especially during Iowa’s harsh winters. The good news? Many causes have simple fixes you can handle yourself.
Here are the most common reasons your furnace blows cold air:
Quick Fixes (DIY-Friendly):
- Thermostat set to “Fan ON” instead of “Auto”
- Thermostat accidentally set to “Cool” mode
- Dirty air filter restricting airflow
- Furnace switch turned off
Common Mechanical Issues:
- Pilot light or ignition system failure
- Gas supply valve closed or fuel shortage
- Overheated furnace triggering safety shutoff
- Dirty flame sensor causing cycling issues
Advanced Problems (Call a Pro):
- Leaky ductwork pulling in cold air
- Clogged condensate drain line
- Faulty control board or blower motor
- Cracked heat exchanger
When your furnace hasn’t run for a while, cold air is normal at first due to the air in the ductwork being cold and needing time to get warm. However, if cold air continues blowing after 10-15 minutes, you have a problem that needs attention.
About 20 to 30 percent of heated air gets lost through duct leaks in typical homes, which can make your furnace work harder and still leave you cold. The key is knowing which issues you can fix yourself and which require professional help to avoid safety risks.

First, Check the Simple Stuff: Easy DIY Fixes
Before you panic, start with the simplest solutions. Many times, a furnace blowing cold air is due to a minor oversight you can correct yourself.
Check Your Thermostat Settings
The thermostat is the brain of your heating system, and sometimes, it just needs a little adjustment. This is often the first and easiest thing to check when your furnace is blowing cold air.
First, ensure your thermostat is set to “Heat” mode, not “Cool” or “Off.” It might sound obvious, but it’s an easy mistake to make. Next, check the temperature setting. Is it set higher than the current room temperature? If your home is already at or above the set temperature, your furnace won’t turn on the heat.
Another common culprit is the fan setting. Most thermostats have an “Auto” and an “On” (or “Fan”) setting for the blower fan.
- If your thermostat is set to “On” (or “Fan”), the fan will blow air continuously, 24/7, even between heating cycles. This means that if the furnace isn’t actively heating, it will simply circulate unheated air, making it feel like your furnace is blowing cold air.
- If your thermostat is set to “Auto,” the fan will only run when the furnace is actively producing heat. This is the recommended setting for energy efficiency and comfort during the heating season.
If your furnace is blowing cold air, switch the fan setting from “On” to “Auto.” If you have a programmable thermostat, review its schedule for errors. Also, check the batteries if it’s battery-powered, as dead batteries can cause communication issues with your furnace.
Inspect and Change the Air Filter
A dirty air filter is one of the most frequent—and preventable—reasons for a furnace blowing cold air. Your furnace filter traps dust, dirt, and allergens, but when it gets too dirty, it blocks airflow.
A clogged filter restricts the air moving through your furnace, forcing the system to work harder. This reduced airflow can cause your furnace’s heat exchanger to overheat. When the heat exchanger overheats, safety mechanisms kick in, turning off the burners to prevent damage and potential fire hazards. However, the fan often continues to blow to cool down the overheated components, resulting in your furnace blowing cold air. This is a classic sign that you might need to schedule furnace repair.
We recommend checking your furnace filter at least once a month, especially during peak heating season in Iowa. If it looks dirty, change it! It’s an easy DIY fix.
- Turn off the power: Always switch off your furnace at the thermostat and the main power switch (often located near the furnace) before handling any internal components.
- Locate the filter: Most air filters are in a special compartment attached to your furnace, usually in the return air duct or where the ductwork meets the furnace. If you have trouble finding it, consult your owner’s manual.
- Note the size and airflow direction: Filters have arrows indicating the direction of airflow. Make sure your new filter is installed correctly.
- Replace: Remove the old, dirty filter and insert the new one.
- Restore power: Turn the furnace power back on.
Changing your filter regularly ensures proper airflow, prevents overheating, and keeps your system running efficiently. We recommend changing it every 90 days, or more frequently if you have pets or allergies.

Why Is My Furnace Blowing Cold Air? Common Causes Explained
If the simple fixes didn’t work, it’s time to look deeper into your furnace’s inner workings. Understanding these issues can help you determine if you need a quick fix or professional help. These are some of the common heating repair issues we fix.
The three main culprits behind a furnace blowing cold air at this level are ignition problems, fuel supply issues, and safety shutoffs due to overheating. Let’s walk through each one so you know what to look for.
Pilot Light or Ignition System Failure
Your furnace needs a spark to get started, just like your car. When this ignition system fails, you’ll have a furnace blowing cold air because the gas never actually ignites to create heat.
Older furnaces (typically pre-2010) rely on a small, continuous flame called a pilot light. It’s a small, continuous flame that’s always burning, ready to light the main burners when your thermostat calls for heat. If this little flame goes out, your furnace can’t produce heat no matter how hard it tries.
You can often relight a pilot light yourself by following the instructions printed on a label inside your furnace. However, if the pilot light keeps going out, you likely have a faulty thermocouple (a safety sensor that tells the gas valve if the pilot is lit) or a draft.
Modern furnaces use electronic ignition systems instead. These include hot surface igniters (which glow red-hot like a toaster element) or intermittent pilot systems. When these fail, your furnace simply can’t light the gas. A dirty flame sensor is often the troublemaker here, causing your furnace to start up, then shut down moments later when it can’t “see” the flame properly.

Fuel Supply Problems
Even the best ignition system in the world can’t help if there’s no fuel to burn. Fuel supply problems are surprisingly common causes of a furnace blowing cold air, and some are easier to fix than others.
Check your gas supply valve. This is usually a yellow or red lever near where the gas line enters your furnace. When the handle runs parallel to the pipe, it’s open. When it’s perpendicular (sideways), it’s closed. Sometimes these get accidentally turned off during home maintenance or renovations.
If you use propane or heating oil, check your tank levels. Running out of fuel is a common oversight, especially during the first cold snaps. An empty tank means no heat.
Gas line issues are more serious territory. If you suspect problems with the actual gas lines – like damaged pipes or insufficient gas pressure – don’t try to fix these yourself. No, your furnace should not be blowing cool air when it’s trying to heat, and gas problems require immediate professional attention for safety reasons.
An Overheated Furnace Blowing Cold Air
It may seem confusing, but sometimes a furnace blowing cold air is protecting itself from damage. Modern furnaces have safety features that shut down heating when the system gets too hot.
When your furnace overheats, a high limit switch kicks in and turns off the burners. The tricky part is that the blower fan keeps running to cool the overheated components. This makes it sound like the furnace is working, but only cold air comes out.
Overheating typically happens when there’s restricted airflow. We covered dirty air filters earlier, but blocked return vents, closed registers, or an overheated furnace can also cause this problem. When the heat exchanger can’t transfer heat properly to the air flowing over it, temperatures spike.
You might notice short cycling – where your furnace turns on, runs briefly, shuts off, then starts up again a few minutes later. This on-and-off pattern is your furnace trying to heat but getting too hot too quickly.
While changing a filter is a DIY job, persistent overheating usually signals a deeper problem that needs professional diagnosis. Your furnace is playing it safe because it has detected a problem.
Advanced Troubleshooting: When to Inspect and When to Stop
Now we’re getting into trickier territory. These issues require more detective work and often need professional expertise to fix safely. Don’t feel bad if these solutions are beyond your comfort zone—that’s what we’re here for! These are common furnace repair problems we can fix.
Leaky Ductwork Diluting Heat
Think of your ductwork as the highway system for warm air in your home. Just like a highway with potholes and detours, leaky ducts can cause major problems. When there are holes, loose connections, or gaps in your ductwork, that precious heated air escapes into spaces where you don’t need it – like your attic, crawl space, or basement walls.
Worse, cold air from these unheated areas gets sucked into your duct system. Instead of delivering warm air, your furnace ends up mixing that heat with cold air. The result is a furnace blowing cold air that leaves you feeling chilly.
According to Energy Star, about 20 to 30 percent of heated air gets lost through duct leaks in typical homes. This explains why your energy bills might be higher than expected, even when your furnace seems to be running constantly.
If you can access your ductwork (maybe in your basement or crawl space), take a flashlight and look for obvious gaps or disconnected sections. You might feel air leaking out with your hand. Small leaks can sometimes be sealed with proper HVAC tape or mastic sealant, but extensive duct problems definitely need professional attention.
Clogged Condensate Line (High-Efficiency Furnaces)
If you have a high-efficiency furnace, you have an extra component to consider: the condensate drain line. These furnaces create water as a byproduct of the heating process.
This water needs somewhere to go, and that’s where the condensate line comes in. Over time, this drain line can get clogged with algae, dirt, or that slimy buildup that seems to appear in any moist, dark place. When the line gets blocked, water backs up into your furnace.
Most high-efficiency furnaces have a safety switch that detects water backup and shuts down the burners to protect the equipment. The blower fan might keep running, but without the burners, you’ll get a furnace blowing cold air. Water pooling around the base of your furnace is a key sign of this problem.
Sometimes you can clear minor clogs by flushing the line with a bleach and water solution. There are helpful tutorials available, including unclogging the condensate drain line using this video tutorial. However, if the problem keeps coming back or you’re not comfortable working around your furnace, it’s time to call in the professionals.
A Dirty Flame Sensor causing your furnace to blow cold air
Here’s a small component that can cause big headaches: the flame sensor. This little rod sits right in the path of your burner flame and acts like a safety guard. Its job is to confirm that when gas flows into the combustion chamber, there’s actually a flame there to burn it safely.
When the flame sensor gets covered in soot, dust, or grime (which happens naturally over time), it can’t properly detect the flame. Even though there might be a perfectly good flame burning, the dirty sensor tells the furnace control board, “Hey, I don’t see a flame here!” The control board then shuts off the gas supply for safety reasons.
This creates a frustrating cycle: your furnace starts, the burners light for a minute, then everything shuts down except the blower fan. You end up with a furnace blowing cold air and a system that keeps trying to restart.
While some handy homeowners can handle this, it requires working carefully with furnace components. If you’re not comfortable with this task, don’t hesitate to call a professional.

When to Call a Professional for Furnace Repair
While we empower homeowners to tackle simple fixes, some situations require a professional HVAC technician. We’ve seen well-intentioned DIY attempts turn into bigger problems or safety hazards. Here’s when it’s time to call the pros.
Knowing when to stop troubleshooting is as important as knowing how to start. The importance of heating repair services is clear when dealing with dangerous situations or complex failures that could leave you without heat.
Safety First: Gas Leaks and Electrical Hazards
Some furnace problems aren’t just inconvenient – they’re genuinely dangerous. If you encounter any of these situations, turn off your furnace immediately and call for professional help. Your safety is the top priority.
If you smell natural gas (that distinctive rotten egg odor) anywhere near your furnace or in your home, don’t hesitate. Leave your house immediately, avoid using light switches or creating sparks, and call your gas company or emergency services from a safe distance. Never try to locate a gas leak yourself.
Carbon monoxide is another serious threat that homeowners can’t see, smell, or taste. The dangers of carbon monoxide are real and potentially fatal. If your carbon monoxide detector goes off, or if you experience symptoms like headaches, dizziness, nausea, or confusion, get to fresh air immediately and call 911. A cracked heat exchanger can leak carbon monoxide into your home’s air supply. This is why we recommend annual furnace tune-ups—we can spot these dangers before they become life-threatening.
Electrical problems are another red flag. If you notice frayed wires, sparks, burning plastic smells, or if your furnace’s circuit breaker keeps tripping, don’t touch anything. Turn off the power to your furnace at the breaker box and call a professional immediately.
Complex Mechanical and Electrical Failures
Beyond safety concerns, some issues causing your furnace blowing cold air require specialized tools and experience. Homeowners can spend a weekend trying to diagnose problems that a professional can identify and fix quickly.
A faulty control board acts like your furnace’s brain, and when it malfunctions, strange things happen. Your blower might run continuously without the burners ever lighting, or your system might behave erratically – heating when it shouldn’t or refusing to heat when you need it most. These control boards are expensive components that require precise diagnosis and programming.
Blower motor failure is another tricky issue. The motor might still technically run but not move air effectively, or it could be making grinding, squealing, or rattling noises that signal imminent failure. Replacing a blower motor involves electrical connections and precise mounting, making it a job for a professional, not a weekend DIY project.
A bad limit switch can trick your furnace’s control system into thinking it’s overheating, causing the safety systems to shut down the burners while the fan continues running cold air. This component is integrated into your furnace’s safety systems and requires professional replacement.
Perhaps most seriously, a cracked heat exchanger can allow dangerous combustion gases to mix with your home’s air supply. You might notice visible cracks, soot buildup inside the furnace, or strange odors. This is an emergency that requires immediate professional attention and often means replacing the entire furnace.

Frequently Asked Questions about a Furnace Blowing Cold Air
We get tons of questions from Des Moines homeowners about their heating systems, especially when things start going sideways in the middle of winter. Here are the most common questions we hear about a furnace blowing cold air.
Is it normal for my furnace to blow cold air when it first turns on?
Don’t panic if you feel cool air when your furnace first kicks on—this is normal. When your furnace hasn’t run for a while, the air in your ducts is at room temperature. Your furnace needs a few minutes to fire up the burners and warm the heat exchanger.
Most modern furnaces also have a blower delay built right in. This smart feature prevents the fan from pushing air through your home until the air is actually warm.
So if your furnace is blowing cold air for the first minute or two after it starts up, that’s just how it’s supposed to work. But if you’re still getting cold air after 10 to 15 minutes, you have a problem that needs attention.
How often should I change my furnace filter?
Changing your filter is one of the most important things you can do for your furnace. We tell our customers to change their filter every 90 days as a general rule, but your home might need it more often.
If you have pets that shed, you’ll probably need to change the filter every 30 to 60 days. The same applies if there’s construction in your neighborhood or during dusty conditions in Des Moines.
Got someone in the house dealing with allergies or asthma? A monthly filter change can make a huge difference in your indoor air quality. Plus, it’s the easiest way to prevent your furnace from blowing cold air due to overheating issues.
Here’s a pro tip: check your filter monthly, even if you don’t plan to change it. Hold it up to the light – if you can’t see through it clearly, it’s time for a new one.
Can I run my furnace if it’s blowing cold air?
This depends on the cause. If your thermostat fan is set to “On” instead of “Auto,” you can run it, but you’re paying to circulate unheated air, which is inefficient and uncomfortable.
But if your furnace is blowing cold air because it’s overheating and shutting down for safety reasons – maybe from a clogged filter or a faulty limit switch – you need to turn it off right away. Running an overheating furnace can lead to expensive damage and dangerous situations.
And if you smell gas, detect any signs of carbon monoxide, or see electrical problems like sparks or frayed wires? Shut it down immediately and call for help. No amount of warmth is worth risking your family’s safety.
When in doubt, the safest bet is to turn off your system and call us. It’s better to be cautious than to risk your comfort and safety.

My furnace quit working on a -6-degree day. I called and Christian showed up within a few hours. He was very friendly knowledgeable and honest! I appreciate that! Within an hour I had a functioning furnace.

Christian from True Comfort was very personable and Professional. He confirmed what was suspected with my Air Cleaner and replaced the part quickly, which allowed the unit to function again. Christian also noticed the dryer vent had come apart so he fixed that for me as well. I would definitely consider using True Comfort if you need someone to service your heating or cooling systems!

Great Communication with service. Very friendly staff. The service technician explained everything he was doing and why. They answered all my questions. I signed up for their yearly maintenance plan. I would recommend them for your furnace needs. Great service!

Logan, our service tech, was extremely nice and pleasant, to the point where it felt like we were old time friends. He had no problems with me being in his company while he worked. In fact, he gave me a blow by blow detail of what was going on with my furnace. Not only did he tell me what was wrong, but how it became wrong and how he was going to fix it. He also was knowledgeable enough to point out other potential problems, that could result, from the set up of my duct system in relation to the furnace, all without pressuring me into an up-sale situation. On a scale of 1 to 5, I would rate my experience with him as a 10,

My furnace stopped firing up on a Saturday as we were getting ready to go out of town. I started down the google list of calling companies. I got to True Comfort and they were able to get me in the same day! When Logan arrived, as always the furnace fires right up like there wasn’t an issue. He was still determined to find the problem. He went above and beyond checking pressures at all possible fail points. He pulled the system apart and found the last service cleaning did not do a great job. He cleaned and serviced the furnace and it fired up with 10% more power and efficiency. Thank you, Logan! I’m already on their books for an April AC tube-up! This will be my HVAC company from here on out!

Sarah at the office is very pleasant and professional. I really liked that the service representative’s picture and brief personal history was sent. We had a great experience with True Comfort. They arrived on time on a Saturday and a Sunday, braving blizzard conditions and -30+ degree windchills to make sure our family had a new furnace as quickly as possible. Service was extremely friendly and respectful. They did great work and left no mess. Pricing was better than most. We dealt with a dad and his two sons. This is a great family-run business that puts customer service and satisfaction as a top priority was our experience.

The day after moving into our new home or furnace stopped working so I went with True Comfort and I’m so glad I did. The lady at the office was so pleasant and upbeat it almost made me forget we were freezing. She calmly assured me they could get a guy out there that day and gave me an arrival window. Christian, our technician, let me know he was on his way and was about an hour earlier than expected – awesome. One thing I noticed was he walked up to the door with his tools in hand which meant ...

My family and I would 100% recommend this small, family-owned business to anyone looking for wonderful service! I would (and did) choose them over all the other companies, just based off the other reviews. I’m so glad I did! They were quick, did a great job, they were also very informative, and just all around good people. Will definitely call them for any future needs. Thank you Logan, Johnathan, Trent, Jake and Matt. I appreciate you all!

After my furnace went out, I originally called a different company that was obviously in it for the money. While there was a chance to fix it, we decided to replace our 25-year-old system. After Golden Rule quoted me a very large amount, I called around looking for quotes that may be more reasonable. True Comfort offered to come out with a free second opinion. After being talked at for hours by the Golden Rule people, True Comfort was a refreshing change. Logan (very knowledgeable and kind) was honest and upfront about everything. During the blizzard of ’24 these wonderful people not only answered their phones when the other bigger companies did not but, they also gave us great service from beginning to end. We needed a whole new furnace and they made the whole process as pain-free as possible. Even lending us space heaters while we waited for the new unit to be installed. The workers were very professional and kind. I would definitely hire them again or recommend them to everyone needing service.

They let me know exactly what they were doing during the process of installing my furnace. I initially was scheduled for Friday and they were able to get out Monday (which was really nice considering it is cold). I highly recommend True Comfort! Thank you guys so much!
