Common Heating and Cooling Transition Issues in Urbandale Split-Level Homes
Your split-level home's staggered floors create a perfect storm for temperature imbalances. We examine why single-zone HVAC systems struggle and how to properly balance your airflow before winter.

The Unique Challenge of Urbandale Split-Level Homes During the Fall Transition
Your downstairs den feels like a refrigerator, but the moment you walk up the stairs to the bedrooms, you are hit with a wall of stale, sweltering heat. If you are dealing with common heating and cooling transition issues in Urbandale split-level homes, you already know how frustrating this constant temperature tug-of-war can be. The architectural charm of staggered floors quickly loses its appeal when your family is arguing over the thermostat setting every evening. Homeowners often face a difficult decision: do you attempt to manually balance the vents yourself, or is it time to seek professional HVAC modifications before the harsh winter weather arrives?
Whether you need comprehensive HVAC services or targeted heating repair and maintenance, finding a permanent solution requires understanding exactly why your home behaves this way.
The staggered-floor architecture that became highly popular in late 20th-century residential builds creates a perfect storm for airflow stagnation. Because these homes rarely feature physical doors separating the different levels, the open stairwells act like massive chimneys. This structural design, paired with single-zone ductwork originally designed decades ago, simply cannot keep up with modern comfort expectations. To achieve true whole-home comfort, you have to look beyond the thermostat dial and address the underlying physics of how air moves through your living space.
Understanding the Stack Effect in Staggered-Floor Architecture
To fix the temperature disparities in Urbandale split-level homes, you first have to understand the fundamental laws of thermodynamics at play inside your walls. The primary culprit behind your comfort issues is a physical phenomenon known as the stack effect. Because warm air is less dense than cold air, it possesses natural thermal buoyancy. It will always seek the highest point in an enclosed space.
Conversely, dense, heavy cold air sinks and settles into the lowest available areas. In a standard two-story home, doors and distinct floor separations help mitigate this movement. However, in a split-level design, the half-flights of stairs provide an unobstructed pathway for air to migrate freely. As a result, the warm air generated by your furnace—or trapped from the afternoon sun—rushes up to your vaulted upper-level bedrooms, leaving the lower dens and basements freezing cold.
How Heat Stratification Traps Air
This constant migration of air leads to a condition called heat stratification. Over the course of the day, distinct layers of temperature form across your home's staggered floors. The barrier between these layers can be remarkably sharp; you might literally feel a ten-degree difference simply by walking up five steps.
• Vaulted Upper Bedrooms — Air Density Dynamics: Low density, highly buoyant air pools near the ceiling. — Common Comfort Symptom: Sweltering, stuffy heat; difficulty sleeping at night.
• Main Living Area — Air Density Dynamics: Moderate density; acts as a transition zone. — Common Comfort Symptom: Generally comfortable, but drafts are common near stairs.
• Lower Den / Basement — Air Density Dynamics: High density; cold air pools and stagnates. — Common Comfort Symptom: Freezing temperatures; floors feel icy to the touch.
Because open stairwells act as chimneys for warm air, your HVAC system's blower motor has to work incredibly hard to push conditioned air against these natural thermal currents. Without targeted intervention, the system simply dumps air into the path of least resistance, exacerbating the uneven temperatures across your home.

Navigating Iowa's Drastic September Temperature Swings
The architectural challenges of a split-level home are magnified significantly by the local climate. The September fall transition in Central Iowa is notoriously unpredictable. Des Moines and Urbandale weather averages during early autumn frequently feature drastic diurnal shifts—meaning the temperature difference between daytime highs and nighttime lows can be extreme.
It is not uncommon to experience a beautiful 78-degree afternoon that plummets into the low 40s by midnight. These 30-to-40 degree temperature swings place an immense strain on your home's thermal mass. During the afternoon, the sun beats down on your roof, heating the upper levels of the house. By the time the sun sets and the outdoor temperature drops near freezing, the lower levels of your home rapidly lose heat through the foundation.
This creates a massive load-switching problem for your HVAC equipment. In the span of twelve hours, your house requires robust cooling to make the upper bedrooms tolerable, followed immediately by heavy heating to keep the basement den from turning into an icebox. Knowing exactly when to turn off your AC and turn on the furnace becomes a daily guessing game. Because the home's staggered structure traps heat upstairs and cold downstairs simultaneously, the drastic external weather shifts make it nearly impossible for the house to naturally equalize its internal temperature.
Why Single-Zone HVAC Systems Struggle with Multi-Level Comfort
If your home still relies on its original ductwork configuration, you are likely fighting a losing battle against the physics of your house. Single-zone HVAC systems are inherently limited when it comes to managing staggered-floor environments. The primary flaw lies in how the equipment monitors your indoor climate.
A traditional, single-zone setup relies on one thermostat, usually mounted on the main floor hallway or living room. This device only reads the ambient temperature of the specific square footage immediately surrounding it. If the main floor reaches your desired 70 degrees, the thermostat shuts the entire system down. It has absolutely no way of knowing that the upstairs bedrooms are baking at 78 degrees or that the downstairs den is shivering at 62 degrees.
Furthermore, many Urbandale split-level homes built in the 1970s and 1980s were constructed with ductwork that prioritized cost and simplicity over balanced airflow. The duct trunks were rarely sized to accommodate the long runs necessary to push air forcefully into the lowest levels or pull stagnant air out of vaulted ceilings. Upgrading to smart thermostats with remote room sensors can provide your system with a much more accurate picture of the temperature disparities across your home, allowing the equipment to average out the differences and run more effectively.
The Dangers of DIY Vent Balancing and Airflow Restriction
Faced with a freezing basement and a sweltering upper floor, many homeowners attempt a quick, logical fix: they walk around the house and manually close the supply registers in the rooms that are already comfortable. The assumption is that by blocking off airflow to the main level, the system will be forced to push more air into the problem areas. Unfortunately, this DIY vent balancing approach is highly destructive to single-zone HVAC systems.
Your heating and cooling equipment is designed to operate within a very specific range of airflow, known as static pressure. When you close more than 20% of your home's registers, you are not redirecting air—you are creating a massive roadblock inside your ductwork.
The cascading consequences of high static pressure:
• Blower motor burnout: The fan has to work exponentially harder to push air against the closed vents, leading to premature motor failure.
• Frozen evaporator coils: During the cooling cycle, restricted airflow prevents the system from absorbing enough heat, causing the indoor coil to turn into a block of ice.
• Overheated heat exchangers: During the heating cycle, trapped air causes the furnace to overheat, potentially cracking the heat exchanger and risking carbon monoxide exposure.
• Increased duct leakage: High pressure forces conditioned air out through tiny gaps and seams in your ductwork, wasting energy inside your walls.
Rather than relying on band-aid DIY fixes that damage your equipment, you need a professional diagnostic evaluation. Working with a veteran-owned company means you get a disciplined, honest approach to your airflow problems. Technicians focus on addressing root-cause physics rather than just pushing a quick sale. For instance, during a recent winter service call, a severe heater issue was diagnosed as a catastrophic failure caused by restricted airflow. By applying a systematic diagnostic process, the technicians pinpointed the root cause quickly and resolved the breakdown efficiently—in less time than estimated—saving the equipment from further damage. Proper indoor air quality solutions and duct evaluations ensure your system breathes freely without putting your hardware at risk.
Professional Solutions: HVAC Zoning and Ductless Systems
To permanently resolve the temperature disparities in Urbandale split-level homes, you need to move beyond single-zone limitations and implement mechanical solutions that actually control where the air goes. There are two primary professional interventions that yield exceptional results for staggered-floor architecture.
Targeted Comfort Where You Need It Most
The first option is mechanical HVAC zoning. This involves retrofitting your existing ductwork with a series of motorized dampers. These dampers act like traffic lights for your conditioned air, opening and closing based on the demands of multiple thermostats placed on different levels of the home.
The professional zoning process generally includes:
1. Load Calculation: Technicians perform a detailed assessment of your home's thermal mass, window placement, and natural airflow patterns.
2. Damper Installation: Motorized dampers are installed inside the main duct trunks leading to the upper, middle, and lower levels.
3. Bypass Duct Integration: A bypass duct is added to safely manage static pressure when only one zone is calling for air, protecting your blower motor.
4. Control Panel Setup: A central control board is wired to communicate between the new thermostats, the dampers, and your main HVAC unit.
If your existing ductwork is inaccessible or undersized, the second highly effective solution is the installation of ductless mini-split systems. These units bypass ductwork entirely. A single outdoor compressor connects to multiple indoor air handlers mounted directly on the walls of your problem rooms. This allows you to heat the freezing lower den while simultaneously cooling the sweltering upper bedroom, completely neutralizing the stack effect.
Professional installation is vital for both of these solutions to ensure proper load calculations and equipment sizing. During a recent winter installation of new heating and cooling units, the installation team arrived on time, secured the new equipment, and took the time to thoroughly explain the system's maintenance requirements and operational nuances before leaving. Upgrading to high-efficiency zoning or ductless technology often qualifies for various generic energy rebates or federal tax credits, so it is always wise to check current incentive programs with your utility provider or tax professional when planning your upgrade.
Frequently Asked Questions About Split-Level Heating and Cooling
How do you balance heat in a split-level house?
Balancing heat requires managing the natural rise of warm air and the sinking of cold air. The most effective method is installing a mechanical HVAC zoning system that uses motorized dampers to direct airflow independently to different floors. Upgrading to a smart thermostat with remote room sensors can also help your single-zone system average out the temperature disparities.
Why is the lower level of my split-level home always cold?
The lower level is always cold due to the stack effect and thermal buoyancy. Cold air is denser and heavier than warm air, so it naturally sinks to the lowest point in the house. Because split-level homes lack distinct floor separations, the dense air pools in the basement and lower dens while all the warm air escapes up the open stairwells.
Where should a thermostat be placed in a split-level home?
A central thermostat should be placed on an interior wall on the main living level, away from direct sunlight, drafts, and open stairwells. However, because a single thermostat cannot monitor staggered floors, using a smart thermostat system with remote wireless sensors placed in the upper bedrooms and lower den is highly recommended for accurate monitoring.
What is the best HVAC system for a split-level home?
A zoned HVAC system or a multi-zone ductless mini-split system is the best choice for staggered-floor architecture. These systems allow you to control the temperature of each level independently. Ductless mini-splits are particularly effective for resolving isolated problem areas, like a freezing basement or a sweltering vaulted bedroom, without requiring major ductwork modifications.
Can closing registers damage my furnace or air conditioner?
Yes, closing registers can cause severe damage to your HVAC equipment. Closing more than 20% of your home's vents drastically increases static pressure inside the ductwork. This restriction strains the blower motor, can cause the air conditioner's evaporator coil to freeze solid, and may lead to the furnace heat exchanger overheating and cracking.
Achieve Whole-Home Comfort Before the Iowa Winter Hits
A clear understanding of how the stack effect interacts with your split-level architecture is the first step to achieving true, lasting comfort. You do not have to spend another season battling the thermostat while the September fall transition wreaks havoc on your home's internal temperature. By moving away from risky DIY vent adjustments and embracing targeted, professional airflow solutions, you can completely neutralize the stubborn hot and cold spots across your staggered floors.
Take action now to prepare your home. Schedule a professional diagnostic evaluation to tailor a zoning or ductless solution specifically for your living space. Reach out to a local expert for comprehensive heating repair and maintenance to ensure your system is perfectly balanced and ready to perform flawlessly before the harsh Iowa winter arrives.

They came out the next day and Logan the service tech was friendly, fast, and very knowledgeable. I have an older furnace and intend to try to sell me a new furnace he pointed out a few issues I could have in the near future. Definitely recommend it to anyone who has any heating and cooling issues.

I had the pleasure of working with Nate and Jake and they were absolutely amazing! They were very friendly and were sure to answer any questions I had. They let me know exactly what they were doing during the process of installing my furnace. I initially was scheduled for Friday and they were able to get out Monday (which was really nice considering it is cold). I highly recommend True Comfort! Thank you guys so much!

Logan is exceptional, he installed our humidifier and also did a great job explaining to us why our heating system was turned off, which was installed by a previous company. If we have any future issues we will definitely call True Comfort HVAC

Honest pricing, great work, answered all our questions and explained the new thermostat and pump installed with the new system. Cleaned up the basement cleaner than before the installation. We are extremely happy with our new furnace/AC. They went above and beyond all expectations. Highly recommend it to anyone looking to update their system.

I highly recommend this company for your HVAC needs. I called them in the morning for a furnace problem and they were at my house the same day. The problem was fixed within the hour. They called me several times to update me on the technician’s ETA and sent me a link to track him once he was heading my way. Their services are affordable and everyone I spoke to, from their office representative, Vanessa, to our technician, Christain, were so helpful and friendly.

My furnace quit working on a -6-degree day. I called and Christian showed up within a few hours. He was very friendly knowledgeable and honest! I appreciate that! Within an hour I had a functioning furnace.

Christian from True Comfort was very personable and Professional. He confirmed what was suspected with my Air Cleaner and replaced the part quickly, which allowed the unit to function again. Christian also noticed the dryer vent had come apart so he fixed that for me as well. I would definitely consider using True Comfort if you need someone to service your heating or cooling systems!

Logan, our service tech, was extremely nice and pleasant, to the point where it felt like we were old time friends. He had no problems with me being in his company while he worked. In fact, he gave me a blow by blow detail of what was going on with my furnace. Not only did he tell me what was wrong, but how it became wrong and how he was going to fix it. He also was knowledgeable enough to point out other potential problems, that could result, from the set up of my duct system in relation to the furnace, all without pressuring me into an up-sale situation. On a scale of 1 to 5, I would rate my experience with him as a 10,

My furnace stopped firing up on a Saturday as we were getting ready to go out of town. I started down the google list of calling companies. I got to True Comfort and they were able to get me in the same day! When Logan arrived, as always the furnace fires right up like there wasn’t an issue. He was still determined to find the problem. He went above and beyond checking pressures at all possible fail points. He pulled the system apart and found the last service cleaning did not do a great job. He cleaned and serviced the furnace and it fired up with 10% more power and efficiency. Thank you, Logan! I’m already on their books for an April AC tube-up! This will be my HVAC company from here on out!

Sarah at the office is very pleasant and professional. I really liked that the service representative’s picture and brief personal history was sent. Also, very professional and polite service from a representative. He even replaced a light bulb for me in the furnace room. Well definitely be using them again.

We had a great experience with True Comfort. They arrived on time on a Saturday and a Sunday, braving blizzard conditions and -30+ degree windchills to make sure our family had a new furnace as quickly as possible. Service was extremely friendly and respectful. They did great work and left no mess. Pricing was better than most. We dealt with a dad and his two sons. This is a great family-run business that puts customer service and satisfaction as a top priority was our experience.

The day after moving into our new home or furnace stopped working so I went with True Comfort and I’m so glad I did. The lady at the office was so pleasant and upbeat it almost made me forget we were freezing. She calmly assured me they could get a guy out there that day and gave me an arrival window. Christian, our technician, let me know he was on his way and was about an hour earlier than expected – awesome. One thing I noticed was he walked up to the door with his tools in hand which meant ...

My family and I would 100% recommend this small, family-owned business to anyone looking for wonderful service! I would (and did) choose them over all the other companies, just based off the other reviews. I’m so glad I did! They were quick, did a great job, they were also very informative, and just all around good people. Will definitely call them for any future needs. Thank you Logan, Johnathan, Trent, Jake and Matt. I appreciate you all!

After my furnace went out, I originally called a different company that was obviously in it for the money. While there was a chance to fix it, we decided to replace our 25-year-old system. After Golden Rule quoted me a very large amount, I called around looking for quotes that may be more reasonable. True Comfort offered to come out with a free second opinion. After being talked at for hours by the Golden Rule people, True Comfort was a refreshing change. Logan (very knowledgeable and kind) was honest and upfront about everything. We were able to replace both our ...

During the blizzard of ’24 these wonderful people not only answered their phones when the other bigger companies did not but, they also gave us great service from beginning to end. We needed a whole new furnace and they made the whole process as pain-free as possible. Even lending us space heaters while we waited for the new unit to be installed. The workers were very professional and kind. I would definitely hire them again or recommend them to everyone needing service.
